Abstract
The distributions of the neurons displaying immunoreactivity to the catecholamine synthetic enzymes, tyrosine hydrogylase(TH), dopamine-¥â-hydrosylase(DBH), and phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase(PNMT) were examined in the midbrain of the mongolian gerbil The animals were perfused with 4%-paraformaldehyde and the brains were cut into 40§ thick coronal sections. Sections were stained immunohistochemically.
Many dopaminergic(DA) neurons(TH-positive, DBH- & PNMT-negative) in the midbrain were present in the pare compacts of substantia nigra(SNC) and ventral tegmental area(VTA). The DA neurone were oval, triangular and multipolar in shape. And smaller DA neurons were found in the pare reticulata of the substantia nigra(SNR), central liner nucleus(CLi) and retrorubral field(RRF). Most DA neurons of the SNR were triangular and multipolar in shape. The dopaminergic neurons of CLi were oval in shape.
The DA neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus(DRN) and central gray(CG) were divided into 3 groups: CG part, upper part of DRN, lower part of DRN. Most DA neurons of the CG part and upper part of DRN were oval and round in shape. And most DA neurons of the lower dopaminergic cell group were directed from dorsal portion to ventral portion.
